ADVENT ONE: DAY THREE - ELIZABETH'S STORY

ADVENT ONE:DAY THREE

Theme: People – Elizabeth – Mary’s Cousin.

Elizabeth's story has three episodes:

1  Elizabeth becomes pregnant, Luke 1:5-25.
Elizabeth was a respectable woman married to Zechariah, a member of the Jerusalem priesthood. She was past menopause, her husband was elderly, and she had given up hoping for child. But Elizabeth's life took an unexpected turn. She became pregnant, to the amazement of all.

2 Mary visits Elizabeth Luke 1:57-66.
While she was pregnant with the future John the Baptist, she gave shelter to her young cousin Mary of Nazareth who, pregnant with Jesus and unmarried, may have been fleeing from the anger of her family. At their meeting, each recognizes that they and their children will be an extraordinary part of God's  plan for humanity

3  Elizabeth gives birth to John, Luke 1:67-80 .
A few months later Elizabeth bore the son she had always hoped for. She named him 'John'. He was circumcised, and Zechariah regains his speech and hearing.

Further reading about this extraordinary women and her story can be found at the following web page – from which the above is acknowledged –

Pause for Thought –

We find yet again a similar story of a women who was beyond child bearing age, becoming pregnant; overtones of both the story of Sarah the wife of Abraham and of Hannah, who gave her son to service in the temple in the book of Samuel.

We see in the story of Elizabeth extraordinary faith in God; knowing that all things work in accordance with the promises of His overwhelming generosity and timing.  But, in her encounter with her pregnant unmarried cousin, Mary; she feels her own unborn child move as an acknowledgement of the miracle of the child her cousin, was carrying.  Elizabeth would give birth to a son, who we know as John the Baptist – who became the forerunner who baptised Jesus.

So often, we want matters in our lives to be, instant – in this story we are yet again reminded that all our requests made known to God, are to be birthed through our faith, and its twin – patience.

Are you in your faith, patient as you wait for your prayers to be answered?

Meditation

The theme of timely faith and patience runs through Elizabeth’s story, in our meditation podcast we are being led into that awesome place of stillness before God – Elizabeth must have spent hours before God in prayer, patiently and faithfully waiting for His answer.  This Christmas, as you are toss into the chaotic commercial and busyness of the season – take some time out and reconnect with the real meaning - Let the words in this podcast speak to you, what are your desires, hopes and needs?   Place them before God just like Elizabeth did; learn the power of patience and faith and expect real timely answers to your prayers in this season of busyness.

This podcast tells a lovely story of a modern women’s trust and her ultimate recovery to wholeness, just like Elizabeth; faith and patience were the power tools that brought the breakthrough.

What breakthrough do you need in your life this Christmastide?

ADVENT ONE: DAY TWO

Theme: People – Anna

Anna’s Story ....

36 There was also a prophet named Anna. She was the daughter of Penuel from the tribe of Asher. Anna was very old. After getting married, she lived with her husband seven years. 37 Then she was a widow until she was 84. She never left the temple. She worshiped night and day, praying and going without eating.

38 Anna came up to Jesus’ family at that very moment. She gave thanks to God. And she spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the time when Jerusalem would be set free.
Bible Reference: Luke Chapter: 2: 36-38
Pause for thought

What a life: widowed after, seven years of, marriage. Her father, born the name: Penuel, that means; – ‘face of God’. She was a member of the tribe of Asher; which means; ‘Happy blessed’. In this time, the meaning of names were very significant, and an important part of ‘who you were’.

What we can take from this simple story is that Anna was a women, of vision, for a time when God’s ultimate promise would be fulfilled; a free Jerusalem – through a promised Messiah.  So committed to God, she chose to rise above her tragic loss, and live out her years as a Servant of God – a Deaconess in the Temple Courts.

Her eyes saw the face of God, in Jesus as a reward for her timely service of devotion – she was a true vision of her ancestors, name – a person who was ‘happy and blessed.

What can Anna’s devotion teach you?

Meditation

The message of Anna, is an act of timely vision. In this meditation listen to the Podcast of the Celtic Hymn – Be thou my vision – who is your vision and inspiration this Christmas?

ADVENT ONE

THEME: PEOPLE

We start Advent One with the theme of ‘People’, who were the key players; what can we learn and ponder in our hearts as we journey towards Christmas?

ADVENT ONE – DAY ONE

Theme: People – Simeon

Simeon’s Story ...

We move just a little ahead of our Christmas story, to a short time after the birth of Jesus; when Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem to be circumcised which was the custom of the day.
In Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was a good and godly man. He was waiting for God’s promise to Israel to happen. The Holy Spirit was with him. 26 The Spirit had told Simeon that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 The Spirit led him into the temple courtyard.
Then Jesus’ parents brought the child in. They came to do for him what the Law required.
28 Simeon took Jesus in his arms and praised God. He said:
29 “Lord, you are the King over all.
Now let me, your servant, go in peace.
    That is what you promised.
30 My eyes have seen your salvation.
31     You have prepared it in the sight of all people.
32 It is a light to be given to those who aren’t Jews.
It will bring glory to your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them. He said to Mary, Jesus’ mother, “This child is going to cause many people in Israel to fall and to rise. God has sent him. But many will speak against him. 35 The thoughts of many hearts will be known. A sword will wound your own soul too.”
Bible Reference: Luke Chapter: 2: 27-35

Pause for thought

Simeon was faithful, waiting patiently for God to keep His promise, that he would see the Christ Child with his own eyes; before he died. His blessing and message to Mary and Joseph, was a foretelling of the sacrifices to come.

Sometimes in life, we also wait, for promises to be fulfilled; in our prayers, petitions and requests. But, what we should always know is, that God will fulfil his promises to us, not in our time, but in His.

What can Simeon’s simple story, teach you?

Meditation

The message of Simeon, is known as the ‘Nunc Dimmitus’; and is frequently sung in Churches. Listen to this podcast of it being sung.  As you listen; pause and reflect on God’s timely promises in your life – how servant minded are you, as we approach Christmas?

WHEN A VIRTUAL LIFE BECOMES .... REALITY!

Recently, I have explored and had personal encounters with those engaged in a virtual world life, there are many such sites around all having similar activities. It begs the question, 'Why', whats wrong with your real life that you need this escapism to vituality! Where you can live in a house, have a job, social life, family, friends and even sex!

There have been reports of actual divorces for people whose marriages have fallen apart because a real partner is having a relationship with someone else, albeit, in a 'virtual world'. When these things cause such a catastrophic breakdown in what was/is a 'stable' long term loving relationship, it begs the question, what is wrong with our society, that we need to escape from reality?

I am placing a link in this post which takes the reader to a media article which has a lot to say about such matters, however, one only has to do a gentle 'google' to find a huge level of former partners, who never thought that they would be ditch for a virtual non-entity like an avatar!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1085915/Divorced-reality-All-accounts-Second-Life-love-triangle-saw-woman-separate-husband-having-cyber-affair.html

I would welcome comments on this blog entry in particular from partners who have been affected by this situation and more so, how they coped, are coping.

Finally, If anyone needs support because of this problem, here noted, do please contact me through this blog.

WOMEN IN MINISTRY

After years of women in ministry being thwarted to high office, yet again The Salvation Army lead the way in the election of a women General - Commissioner Linda Bond who will assume her office on the 2nd April 2011. This is a real sense of God working in His church, women do have a real and meaningful place in ordained ministry.

Please join me in a wave of prayer for Linda, the army she will lead and the wider Church, that her ministry will be one of holiness and Holy Spirit led revival.

The Office announcement states:
he Salvation Army has today announced its new world leader and the 19th General will be Canadian-born Commissioner Linda Bond.

Commissioner Bond becomes the third woman and the fourth Canadian to hold the post of General of The Salvation Army since the international church and charity organisation was founded 146 years ago.

The commissioner, who currently heads up the church and registered charity’s work in the Australian Eastern Territory, was elected by The High Council of The Salvation Army made up of senior leaders from around the world who met this week in Sunbury-on-Thames near London.

Commissioner Linda Bond (64) will have the title General-elect until she succeeds the current world leader General Shaw Clifton, who retires at the beginning of April.

Once in post as General of The Salvation Army, the commissioner will become the head of more than one million Salvationists in 123 countries. The Salvation Army also has more than 100,000 employees who between them communicate in 175 different languages.

In recent days and months, The Salvation Army has been involved in relief work in the aftermath of the Australian floods, the devastating mudslide in Brazil, floods in Sri Lanka, and the New Zealand earthquake.

Commissioner Bond comes to the role of General of The Salvation Army with 42 years' experience of Christian ministry and leadership.

Since 2008 Commissioner Bond has headed up The Salvation Army’s work across Eastern Australia, a huge territory with its headquarters in Sydney. This includes the recently devastated state of Queensland where The Salvation Army continues to be heavily involved in assisting victims of widespread flooding.

Prior to this, the commissioner worked at Salvation Army International Headquarters (IHQ) in London, as the Secretary for Spiritual Life Development and International External Relations. This was her second spell at IHQ where she had previously served as Under Secretary for Personnel in the mid 1990s.

As a Salvation Army officer (ordained minister of religion and leader) Commissioner Bond has served in local corps (church) ministry, on the staff of Salvation Army national and regional (divisional) headquarters and as part of the training staff for new officers in her home territory of Canada and Bermuda. During those years she also served as a divisional and subsequently a leader of The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda.

Other appointments have included divisional leadership roles in the Manchester region of the United Kingdom between 1998 and 1999, and as Territorial Leader in the USA Western Territory of The Salvation Army.

The announcement of the new General of The Salvation Army was broadcast live on the worldwide web. Speaking just after her election Commissioner Bond said:

‘I love the Lord Jesus Christ and pledge my utmost obedience to him. I am absolutely committed to a life of praise and thanksgiving to God. We, the Salvation Army need to be an Army of praise and thanksgiving to God and we must place our trust in God. We need his Holy Spirit to come mightily on  The Salvation Army.’

During the past five years under the leadership of General Shaw Clifton, the work of The Salvation Army has expanded into 12 new countries. The Salvation Army is now in 123 countries. During his term General Clifton established the Salvation Army’s International Social Justice Commission, based in New York USA and the Army’s Centre for Spiritual Life Development in London. The General and Commissioner Helen Clifton have also actively worked to aid the plight of struggling women and children around the world, including mobilising The Salvation Army in a concerted effort against human trafficking. Increasing the role of women in Salvation Army leadership has been of special concern to General Clifton and he has appointed many more women to senior leadership positions around the world than has occurred previously.

The Salvation Army is an international Christian church and registered charity and is one of the largest providers of social welfare in the world. The General directs Salvation Army operations throughout the world via International Headquarters in the City of London. Programmes include accommodation for homeless men, women, children and families; drug rehabilitation centres; schools; hospitals and clinics; HIV/Aids projects, micro-credit schemes, training centres and day-care facilities. Support is also offered through nearly 15,000 local church and community centres.

The Salvation Army across the world increasingly uses the internet and social media to share its Christian message and news about its mission, so it was appropriate that news from the High Council 2011 was shared in this way.

The webcast of the opening service, the Welcome to the High Council and the Salute to General Shaw Clifton, has to date been accessed by more than 20,000 individual computers, with many more thousands expected to have viewed the service. For the first time social media was used to share information about the progress of the High Council in London, with many thousands of people receiving information through Facebook, Twitter and Flickr and more than 5,000 people receiving email news alerts.

Release prepared in conjunction with United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland Communications Department.
